Playa Blanca Parking Lot Closes Amid Costa Rica Beach Access Dispute

Those heading to Playa Blanca at Punta Leona will face another change in how they reach one of Costa Rica’s most popular Central Pacific beaches after the parking area directly in front of the beach was temporarily closed. The closure stems from a disagreement involving Punta Leona Beach Club & Nature Resort and the Ministry of Health’s local office in Garabito over requirements connected to the parking operation and sanitary facilities.

Punta Leona said it is working to address the requirements while seeking clarification of the technical criteria behind the measure. In the meantime, the resort plans to make an auxiliary parking area available and reinforce its shuttle service carrying visitors to and from Playa Blanca.

The development does not mean Playa Blanca itself has been closed. Public access to the beach remains available, but visitors arriving by car should expect different parking arrangements while the dispute is resolved. The closure adds another chapter to a long-running and increasingly complicated debate over public access to Playa Blanca.

In June, the Municipality of Garabito removed barriers controlling access through Punta Leona after municipal officials maintained that the road leading toward the beach is public. The move opened the route to visitors who are not hotel guests or members of the resort. Punta Leona has disputed the municipality’s interpretation and maintains that issues involving the road and surrounding property should ultimately be resolved through the courts.

Parking quickly became one of the biggest practical problems created by increased access. There are relatively few places for vehicles near Playa Blanca, and authorities have warned drivers not to park along the access road. Traffic Police officers have previously removed license plates from vehicles parked illegally in the area after cars obstructed traffic.

Private parking has therefore become an important part of visiting the beach by car. Before the latest closure, the Punta Leona parking facility was one of the main options available to visitors. The service had been offered for â‚¡20,000 for eight hours and included access to bathrooms. Other private parking operators and transportation services are also available around the area.

The latest disagreement highlights a larger challenge surrounding public beach access in Costa Rica. While the country’s beaches are public, reaching them can sometimes be difficult when surrounding land is privately owned or when roads, parking and visitor infrastructure are limited.

Playa Blanca has become one of the clearest examples of the difference between having a legal right to visit a beach and having the infrastructure necessary to accommodate large numbers of visitors. The situation has drawn additional attention because Playa Blanca is widely considered one of the Central Pacific’s most attractive beaches, known for its lighter-colored sand and sheltered waters.

Its location near JacĂ³, Herradura and Carara National Park also makes it easily accessible for anyone staying along the Central Pacific coast. For now though, beach goers planning a trip to Playa Blanca should not assume the parking arrangement they previously used remains available. Those driving to the area should confirm parking options before arriving and avoid leaving vehicles along the access road.

There is currently no announced date for reopening the parking area directly in front of Playa Blanca.
