Jazz Festival Scats Back to San José

San José may be more than 1,000 miles south of the city that gave birth to jazz, but the rhythms of the music that helped define New Orleans will soon soothe the spirits of Costa Ricans, too.

The second Costa Rica International Jazz Festival will take place July 26 through Aug. 9, featuring jazz musicians from the United States, Germany, Japan, France and Costa Rica.

Students from New YorkUniversity and the famous Juilliard School of Music in New York City will perform traditional jazz sets, while Berklee College of Music students and groups from across the globe will step out with a more contemporary approach. International acts will include French musician Alex Terrier, Germany’s Schultzing and Yayoi Ikawa of Japan. Grammy award-winning Tico jazz group Editus will also make an appearance.

The performances, hosted by the Costa Rican-North American Cultural Center, will take place at three San José theaters: the  Eugene O’Neill Theater at the cultural center in Barrio Dent; and the National Theater and Melico Salazar Theater downtown.

General admission is ¢5,000 ($8.70); students and senior citizens pay ¢3,000 ($5.20). For a full concert program, see the Calendar on pages W10 and W11, or call the cultural center at 2207-7505 for information.
