Pineapple Prices Drop Due to Overproduction

THE price of Costa Rica’s numbertwoexport, the pineapple, has dropped62% in just the last month, from $0.40per kilogram in mid-October to $0.15 inmid-November, the daily La Naciónreported. The plummeting prices have beenattributed to overproduction, the reroutingof European ships due to recent hurricanes, and an unexpected 15 days of rainin the Northern Zone. The downpourscaused producers in the area to lose, onaverage, half of the production already inthe factories, in addition to other economiclosses, according to the daily. The drop in prices will prove challengingfor many small producers whogrow pineapple. In the Northern Zone, there are 800 small producers, many ofwhom left other types of agriculture forpineapples.
