American Hotel Owner Slain in in Costa Rica Robbery

Authorities investigate the violent death of Kurt Van Dyke, a 66-year-old U.S. citizen and longtime resident who owned Hotel Puerto Viejo. The incident occurred Saturday morning in Hone Creek, Cahuita, Talamanca. The Judicial Investigation Agency (OIJ) received a report at 10:50 a.m. Van Dyke’s body showed signs of asphyxiation and multiple stab wounds, according to the preliminary examination.

Investigators state that Van Dyke shared an apartment with a woman at the time. Two men entered, pointed guns at them, and confined the pair to a room. The assailants took several valuable items before attacking Van Dyke and leaving the scene.

The woman survived the ordeal. Reports indicate the suspects bound her and escaped using two vehicles, including one taken from the property. Local residents express shock over the loss. Van Dyke had lived in the Caribbean region for many years and built a reputation as a respected business owner. His hotel drew visitors from around the world, contributing to the area’s tourism economy.

OIJ agents collected evidence at the site, including potential fingerprints and security footage from nearby properties. They interview witnesses to piece together the sequence of events. Police urge anyone with information to contact them. No arrests have been made, and the motive appears tied to robbery, though officials explore all angles.

Van Dyke’s family has been notified. Arrangements for his remains proceed as the investigation continues.
