Project to improve infrastructure of Costa Rica’s Daniel Oduber Quirós Airport begins

To increase the operational capacity of the Daniel Oduber Quirós International Airport, the construction of the runway, maneuvering area, and related works will begin this year.

This project is part of the National Development Plan established by the Government and includes an estimated investment of US$100 million. Its execution will be financed with funds from the national budget, the Costa Rican Tourism Institute, and external financing as part of the Technical Council of Civil Aviation program.

“Tourism is an investment and economic dynamism for the country. Our visitors deserve spacious, safe facilities. We want to offer optimal conditions for the airlines, for the tourist and that their visit experience increases tourism, with positive effects for Guanacaste”, said President Rodrigo Chaves.

As confirmed by national authorities, it will be done over three years. During 2023, the financing, bidding, awarding, and pre-execution processes will be finalized. By 2024, 45% of the project will have started, and the work will be completed in 2025.

Particularly, it will be carried out in four phases: Phase 1 includes auxiliary facilities, material stockpiling, and reconstruction of the executive apron.

Meanwhile, Phase 2 will allow for the construction of the contingency runway, groundwork, and taxiway rehabilitation. The third includes restoring and extending runways 7-25 and installing the CAT I instrument approach system. Finally, Phase 4 consists of the finishing touches and dismantling auxiliary facilities to complete the work.

“The Chaves Robles administration is committed to creating development opportunities for communities outside the Greater Metropolitan Area and thereby increasing job creation for its residents,” said the Costa Rican Government.

This airport is extremely important for national and Guanacaste tourism. Recently, many airlines have started operations at the airport. Also, a large number of tourists visiting the country choose to go directly to this province. Therefore, the expansions and improvements will increase the airport’s operations and attract more tourism.
