Swedish Tourist Drowns At La Fortuna

SWEDISH tourist Johan Andreas Johansson, 24, drowned on Monday after diving off a two-meter rock into a swimming hole in La Fortuna de San Carlos, in north-central Costa Rica, the daily La Nación reported.

San Carlos police presume a current sucked the university student away and dragged him 500 meters down the river, where his body was found with injuries to the head and face, according to La Nación.

That afternoon, two Canadian women, one British man and a U.S. man accompanied Johansson at the swimming hole.

In an attempt to rescue Johansson, the U.S. citizen – Patrick Williams, 21, according to Hernán Ocampo, chief of emergency medicine at San Carlos Hospital – fractured his ankle and risked death himself, the daily reported. Johansson entered the country on Dec. 2 from Nicaragua while on holiday, and was staying at hotel Gringo Peters in La Fortuna, where he met Williams.
