High School Students to Attend Space Camp

Two Costa Rican high school students and a teacher will be attending space camp in Huntsville, Alabama next week.

María Ángel Fonseca, a 10th grader at the Experimental Bilingual High School of the coffee town of Grecia, west of San José, Cesar Bran, an 11th grader at the Experimental Bilingual High School of La Trinidad in Moravia, in northeastern San José, and La Trinidad teacher Cecilia Sawyer this year earned this opportunity through an annual contest organized by the Ministry of Public Education (MEP), according to a statement from the Ministry.

The contest, held with support from Intel Costa Rica, which donated plane tickets for winners, and the Universidad Interamericana de Costa Rica, which provided logistical support, awards 15 to 18-year-old students for above-average performance in science and English.

Camp will begin tomorrow and extend until July 29, and bring together students from 32 countries around the world. Costa Rica is the third Latin American country, besides Argentina and Mexico, to be invited to participate in this camp since 1998.

Participants are expected to debate topics on Science and Technology in English.

Education Minister Leonardo Garnier congratulated this year’s winners July 12 and spoke to them about the importance of speaking English, according to Education Ministry spokesman Mauricio Azofeifa.
