Japanese Embassy Helps School in Heredia Suburb

The ApolinarLoboUmañaSchool in the northern suburb of Santo Domingo de Heredia got a hand from the Japanese Embassy recently when it donated $86,206 to build a library and two new classrooms.

Japanese Ambassador Yoshihiko Sumi signed a contract through which the embassy will provide these funds to the Association for the Integral Development of Paracito de Santo Domingo. About 800 students are expected to benefit from these new facilities, according to a statement from the embassy.

The school has been around for 116 years. In a speech, Sumi remarked on its history and on the embassy’s desire to contribute to education in Costa Rica.

The association’s president, Eliécer Madrigal, thanked the embassy and said the donation is “the first stone of what will be a great base to continue improving education in Costa Rica and, with it, be able to put a little piece of Japan into this school,” the statement said.

The donation was made through the embassy’s Assistance for Community Projects and Human Security program.
