Arias Congratulates Gore On Peace Prize Win

President Oscar Arias recently expressed his satisfaction over former U.S. Vice-President Al Gore winning the Nobel Peace Prize for his work to create awareness of global warming.

“This news arrives at a key moment in our history, in which, as never before, humanity has its future in its hands. For many years, wars were the product of men’s aggression, of their desire to destroy their adversaries and annihilate their enemies.

Today, the war against nature emerges from our passivity in the face of lifestyles and consumption that puts our species’ survival at risk,” said Arias, who won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1987 for his work toward peace accords in Central America.

Arias expressed these sentiments in a letter he sent Oct. 12 to Gore and his corecipients of the prize, the U.N.

Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. He also invited Gore to visit Costa Rica to discuss the implications of climate change on the development of sustainable development policies.

“Al Gore and the members of the U.N. panel have shown the world that carbondioxide emissions are as dangerous as bombs and machine guns, and that efforts to conserve our planet aren’t a conspiracy or a whim, but a ticket to allow our children and grandchildren to exercise their right to live on this earth,” he said.
