Highway to airport closed over weekend

Travelers who need to fly out of JuanSantamaríaInternationalAirport over the weekend may have some issues arriving to catch their flights on time, as the highway leading to the airport will be closed from Friday through Monday, according to an official statement.

On Wednesday, the Public Works and Transport Ministry announced the closure, which will begin at midnight Friday and last until 5 a.m. Monday. The closure is to repair two bridges along the General Cañas highway that leads to the airport and the provincial capital of Alajuela.

The closure was deemed necessary to allow workers to repair and strengthen the Juan Pablo II and Virilla bridges with a type of concrete that dries quickly and is more resistant to damage. The heavy flow of traffic and the vibrations it produces would have made working under partial closure difficult, the statement said.

Traffic moving between San José and Alajuela will be detoured through the center of Heredia and Barreal de Heredia by the Costa Rican Traffic Police, the statement said.
