Costa Rica adds 69 new coronavirus cases, 32 recoveries

Costa Rica confirmed 69 new cases of the coronavirus over the past day, totaling 2,127 cumulative known cases, the Health Ministry announced Saturday afternoon.

Thirty-two more people have been classified as recovered under Costa Rica’s new definitions that qualify certain patients based on time rather than a negative test.

Costa Rica has 1,101 active cases and 1,014 recoveries.

Twelve people have died in Costa Rica after contracting the coronavirus. Twenty-seven people are hospitalized with COVID-19, two fewer than Friday. Five people remain in intensive care.

Costa Rica processed 469 tests for SARS-CoV-2 over the last day. It has averaged 487 daily tests over the last five days.

Eleven of Saturday’s new cases were traced to a recent baby shower in Pavas, Health Minister Daniel Salas said.

The cantons of Alajuelita and Desamparados were placed under an orange alert Friday due to an increase in cases. They are the first cantons in the Greater Metropolitan Area (GAM) with this designation.

In those cantons, commercial businesses can only remain open from 5 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays. On weekends, only supermarkets, grocery stores, pharmacies, and health services may operate.

In addition, the country suspended its “Phase 3” of reopening. As a result, beaches, many stores and theaters remain closed this weekend.
