Lufthansa expanding service between Germany and Costa Rica

Lufthansa will add a third weekly flight between Frankfurt and Juan Santamaría International Airport near San José, the Costa Rican Tourism Board (ICT) announced.

The new offering will begin Oct. 27, 2020 using an Airbus A340-300 aircraft with capacity for 279 passengers, ICT says. The route will operate as follows:

  • Departs Frankfurt on Tuesdays at 1:30 p.m. local time, arrives in Alajuela (SJO) at 7:10 p.m.
  • Departs Costa Rica (SJO) at 8:55 p.m., arrives in Germany at 3:00 p.m.

“Germany is one of the most important European markets for Costa Rica, and this third flight between Frankfurt and San José demonstrates the growing interest of the Germans to visit our national territory,” said Maria Amalia Revelo, Minister of Tourism, in a statement.

Currently, Lufthansa flies between Germany and Costa Rica on Thursdays and Saturdays. That non-stop route was inaugurated in 2018, with Lufthansa promoting their offerings to the “green paradise of Central America.”

Swiss leisure airline Edelweiss Air, owned by Lufthansa, also flies between Europe and Costa Rica.

International tourism remains among Costa Rica’s largest industries.

Costa Rica received 3.1 million foreign visitors last year, 4.1% more than in 2018, according to ICT figures. More than 80,500 tourist arrivals from Germany were counted.
