Two months after quitting La Sele, Gustavo Matosas is out at Mexican club

The Uruguayan Gustavo Matosas was dismissed as technical director of the Mexican soccer club Atlético San Luis on Sunday following several poor results and after audio was aired that suggests he obtained profits from the signing of a player.

“As of this date, Mr. Gustavo Matosas has ceased to be the technical director of our team. This decision has been taken by mutual agreement,” the club said in a press release.

On Saturday, Atlético lost 3-2 against Leon in the 15th day of the Apertura 2019 tournament. That marked the fifth defeat in seven games under Matosas.

On Friday, on the eve of that match, audios were revealed during a newscast of the Televisa company in which the coach seemed to have negotiated a commission for the signing of Uruguayan striker Matías Britos in 2012.

“That recording is very strange,” Matosas responded to press questions after the defeat against Leon.

“I will not comment on the subject until I have a clearer picture.”

The arrival of Matosas at Atlético San Luis last month caused controversy because he had resigned as manager of Costa Rica’s men’s national team because “he did not know that the position of coach was so boring.”
