Guatemala’s Pérez Molina confirmed for meeting with Obama in Costa Rica

GUATEMALA CITY – The president of Guatemala, Otto Pérez Molina, confirmed his participation in an upcoming May meeting between the president of Costa Rica, Laura Chinchilla, and her U.S. counterpart, Barack Obama. The presidents of the Central American Integration System (SICA) were also invited.

“I told President Chinchilla that I am willing to participate in the meeting in Costa Rica,” Pérez Molina said, according to the Guatemalan State News Agency.

Obama’s official visit will coincide with a summit of SICA members in Costa Rica, which presides over the organization this year.

Pérez Molina said the meeting is an opportunity for regional presidents to discuss security and bilateral trade issues.

The region has remained on the lookout for immigration reform promoted by Obama that could benefit some 11 million immigrants in the U.S., mostly Latin Americans.
