An Amnesty International mission demanded Thursday that the government of Nicaragua legalize therapeutic abortion to prevent cases of maternal death or of women impregnated from rape who are forced to bear children, a representative told the news agency AFP.
Amnesty had also expressed concern over the high levels of sexual violence against women and girls in Nicaragua, as well as abuses committed against human rights activists and attacks on freedom of expression in the country.
An estimated 500 women have died between 2004 and the first quarter of 2011 in Nicaragua because of domestic violence, according to data released by Nicaraguan organizations.
