From the print edition

William Gómez, founder of Grupo Extra and several national media, died Tuesday afternoon at age 62.

Grupo Extra controls one of the most prominent tabloids in the country, Diario Extra, and other media including La Prensa Libre and ExtraTV 42. Gómez founded Diario Extra 33 years ago, and it became one of the most widely read papers in the country.

Gómez had been suffering from health problems for some time, according to Diario Extra.

President Laura Chinchilla lamented Gómez’s death in a statement, calling him a “tireless worker, who left a deep imprint on national journalism.”
