‘Porteadores’ protests to clog streets of Costa Rica

Hordes of unlicensed taxi drivers, known as porteadores, will be protesting all over San José on Wednesday, beginning at 5:00 a.m., causing traffic jams in the main entrances of the capital city and strategic places around the country.

Protesters will try to put pressure on the government and keep the Costa Rican Code of Commerce from enacting the reforms that will affect the legality of unlicensed cab drivers.

“Porteadores” will demonstrate in the following areas: the northern and southern entries of the Juan Santamaría airport in San José, the Daniel Oduber airport in Libería. Puente de la Amistad in Guanacaste, Pirro bridge in Heredia, the “platina” bridge over the Virilla River and the main entrances to the port of Moín in the Atlantic province of Limón, Route 32 and Cerro de la Muerte.

During the afternoon, the protest will be taken to the Legislative Assembly, where leaders of the movements hope to talk with the members of congress in charge of amending the reform.
