El Refugio Costa Ballena: Making a Difference for Animals and the Community

From rescuing animals in need to providing affordable spay/neuter surgeries and supporting community members’ loving pets, one local nonprofit is changing the lives of thousands of animals across the region.

In communities throughout the southern Pacific coast region, countless dogs and cats need help. Some have been abandoned and left to survive on their own. Others have loving families who simply cannot afford the food or veterinary care their pets need. Since 2017, El Refugio Costa Ballena has been working to change that reality, each and every day.

Located in Uvita, El Refugio Costa Ballena was founded with a straightforward but important mission: to help the dogs and cats in the community. Today, it is the only physical animal shelter in the area, providing a place of safety for animals in need.

Rescue, Rehabilitation, and Second Chances

At the heart of El Refugio’s mission is the rescue and rehabilitation of dogs and cats in need. To date, the shelter has rescued more than 1,200 animals, giving them an opportunity for care, recovery, and a better future.

Take Furia, a recent rescue. She was found on the streets in terrible condition – she has ehrlichia, chronic bacterial and fungal dermatitis, and her eyes are infected.  She weighs only 12kg but should be double that. Now, she is receiving daily medical care and proper nutrition. In time, she’ll be ready for a home of her own.

Rescue is only the beginning. Once animals are ready for their next chapter, the rescue works to find them loving homes where they can become cherished members of a family. So far this year over 110 dogs and cats have been adopted through the organization, representing countless opportunities for new beginnings for both animals and the people who welcome them home.

Helping animals means addressing more than immediate emergencies.

Prevention and Community Assistance

El Refugio Costa Ballena provides free and low-cost castracion services to help control the population of unwanted dogs and cats. To date, the organization has provided more than 7,700 spay/neuter surgeries. These procedures are an important part of addressing animal overpopulation for the long term. By making sterilization more accessible, El Refugio helps reduce the number of unwanted animals and the suffering that often results when communities lack the resources to care for them.

The commitment also extends to pets who already have loving homes. Through its community assistance program, El Refugio Costa Ballena has provided food and medical care for thousands of dogs and cats whose families cannot afford these necessities. For families facing financial hardship, help with pet food or veterinary expenses can make an enormous difference. This combination of rescue, adoption, prevention, and community assistance reflects an important understanding: improving animal welfare requires not only caring for animals in crisis, but also helping prevent the crisis from happening in the first place.

A Community Effort That Needs Everyone

While El Refugio has made a substantial difference since its founding, the need for animal welfare services continues. The work of caring for vulnerable animals also requires the involvement of the wider community. There are many ways residents and visitors can help. Donate to provide essential support for the rescue’s work, including animal care, food, medical treatment, and spay/neuter programs.

Volunteer your time and energy to the organization’s mission. People who want to make a hands-on difference can reach out to learn what assistance is needed.

Foster an animal to provide a temporary home and create space and opportunities for other animals who need care.

Adoption offers one of the most direct ways to change an animal’s life. By welcoming a rescue dog or cat into the family, adopters provide a home and make it possible for the shelter to continue helping others.

Every Animal Deserves a Chance

The challenge of animal welfare is too great for any one organization to address alone. Every donation, every volunteer hour, every foster home, and every adoption can contribute to a better future for the dogs and cats of Costa Rica.

Helping animals starts with a community that cares. Together, we can give more animals the chance to live healthier, safer, and happier lives.
