Novak Djokovic Returns to Cincinnati With US Open History at Stake

Novak Djokovic will return to the Cincinnati Open in August, choosing one final hard-court tournament before resuming his pursuit of a record 25th Grand Slam singles title at the US Open. The 39-year-old Serbian is part of the Cincinnati field after withdrawing from the Canadian Open in Montreal to manage his workload. His decision gives him additional recovery time following Wimbledon while still providing an opportunity to test his form before the season’s final major.

The Cincinnati Open runs from August 8 through August 23. The US Open begins August 23, with the singles main draws starting August 30 in New York. Djokovic’s appearance will mark his return to a tournament where he has produced some of the most memorable tennis of his career.

He is a three-time Cincinnati champion, winning the event in 2018, 2020 and 2023. His most recent title came after a remarkable final against Carlos Alcaraz that lasted three hours and 49 minutes. Djokovic saved a championship point before defeating Alcaraz 5-7, 7-6(7), 7-6(4). The match remains the longest best-of-three-set final in ATP Tour history.

Cincinnati now carries a different kind of importance for Djokovic. He remains capable of reaching the closing stages of the sport’s biggest tournaments, but winning them has become increasingly difficult as Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner have taken control of the men’s game.

Djokovic reached the Australian Open final in February after defeating Sinner in a five-set semifinal. Alcaraz then denied him the title in four sets, becoming the first player to defeat Djokovic in an Australian Open final.

At Wimbledon, Djokovic survived a five-hour, 15-minute quarterfinal against Félix Auger-Aliassime before losing to Sinner in the semifinals. It was another strong Grand Slam run, but it also illustrated the physical challenge facing Djokovic when he must defeat several leading players over two weeks.

“It’s good, but not good enough,” Djokovic said after his Wimbledon exit. His reduced schedule reflects that reality. Djokovic has increasingly avoided tournaments that might leave him physically depleted before the Grand Slams, preferring longer training periods and carefully selected appearances.

That strategy allows him to arrive rested, but it can also leave him short of competitive matches. Cincinnati offers a compromise. It gives Djokovic a high-level hard-court test against many of the same players he could face in New York, while leaving time to recover before the US Open singles competition begins.

The tournament will feature a deep men’s field led by Sinner, Alcaraz and several other leading contenders. Alcaraz won the Cincinnati title in 2025, while Sinner captured the championship in 2024. Djokovic enters the event ranked No. 5, meaning his path could include an earlier meeting with one of the tournament’s leading seeds.

The expanded Cincinnati format also makes recovery between matches and management of the summer heat important parts of any title run. The immediate objective will be finding his timing on outdoor hard courts. The larger question is whether he can still defeat Sinner or Alcaraz late in a major after navigating several demanding rounds.

Djokovic has not won a Grand Slam singles title since the 2023 US Open, when he collected his 24th major. He has continued reaching finals and semifinals since then, but the record-breaking 25th title has remained out of reach. Cincinnati will not settle that pursuit. It will, however, provide the clearest indication yet of whether Djokovic is ready for another serious challenge in New York.
