Costa Rica Confirms Batista as La Sele’s New Head Coach

The Costa Rican Football Federation has named Argentine Fernando Batista as the new head coach of the national team, La Sele. The Executive Committee made the choice after reviewing several candidates, marking the start of a fresh phase for the squad after missing the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Federation President Osael Maroto stated that the group agreed on Batista following a thorough review. They looked at his track record and plans for the future. Contract terms are wrapping up, but officials show faith in the pick. Maroto called it a solid choice that fits the team’s current state and goals.

Batista, at 55, steps in after Miguel Herrera left late last year. Herrera’s time ended when Costa Rica did not make the World Cup. La Sele went without a coach for close to three months, allowing leaders to think about the program’s path. They sought someone with national team know-how and a focus on growth over quick wins.

Batista played as a defender in Argentina for teams like San Lorenzo, Argentinos Juniors, and Godoy Cruz. He moved to coaching after playing, starting with youth groups. He led squads in Argentina and Armenia, then took Venezuela’s national team. There, he handled the 2026 qualifiers and got them to the 2024 Copa América quarterfinals, losing on penalties. His Venezuela deal ended in September 2025, opening the door for Costa Rica.

In the hiring, Batista edged out others, including Spanish coach Robert Moreno. His method stood out: strong setup, defense focus, and bringing in young talent. Officials liked his take on building in tough settings, matching Costa Rica’s needs.

Batista must now build back trust in a team ready to compete again. Fans hold high hopes, but leaders say the aim goes beyond short-term gains. They want steady progress toward the 2030 World Cup and a clear team style.

He starts right away, with friendlies set for late March. Those will show his plans and picks early on. Supporters watch with measured hope as La Sele enters this new stage under Batista.
