Netflix Raises Subscription Prices in Costa Rica

Netflix is increasing subscription prices in Costa Rica beginning March 7, raising monthly costs across all plans available here, according to a notice sent to subscribers. Netflix’s message says the increase will be $1 more per month for the Basic plan and $2 more per month for the Standard and Premium plans, before taxes.

New prices in Costa Rica (before tax):

PlanOld priceNew priceChange
Basic (720p)$8.99$9.99+$1
Standard (1080p)$12.99$14.99+$2
Premium (4K + HDR)$15.99$17.99+$2

Netflix’s notice also summarized plan features, including the number of simultaneous streams and download limits, and pointed to a larger content slate ahead. Taxes will push totals higher. Here in Costa Rica, Netflix subscriptions are subject to the 13% value-added tax (IVA) applied to cross-border digital services. The IVA is collected automatically and appears as a separate charge on bank statements.

Based on the new pre-tax prices, that 13% IVA brings the approximate totals to:

Basic: $9.99 → about $11.29
Standard: $14.99 → about $16.94
Premium: $17.99 → about $20.33

Netflix framed the change as part of a broader regional pricing strategy tied to expanding its catalog. The notice cited 91 upcoming premieres between series and films over the next month. In a 2025 shareholder letter, Netflix told investors that revenue growth has been driven in part by higher pricing, alongside membership growth and advertising revenue, and described the streaming business as “intensely competitive.”

The same letter projected that ad revenue is expected to roughly double in 2026 compared with 2025. Netflix did not publish Costa Rica-specific pricing details in the notice beyond the plan-by-plan changes reported above.
