Elesban Rodríguez, director of the Banda Municipal de Zarcero, stepped into the spotlight at the 137th Rose Parade in Pasadena, California, on New Year’s Day. He became the first Latino band director to ride on the Band Directors float, a key part of the event that honors music educators from around the world.
Rodríguez joined more than 300 directors in the parade, which drew millions of viewers along its 5.5-mile route down Colorado Boulevard. The float, part of the “Best Day Ever!” theme, featured directors marching and performing to celebrate their role in shaping young musicians. His inclusion marked a milestone for Latin American representation in the long-running tradition.
The Zarcero band leader earned the spot after years of leading his group to international acclaim. The band has marched in the Rose Parade twice before, in 2020 and 2024, where they showcased Costa Rican rhythms like salsa and cumbia. This time, Rodríguez represented not just his hometown but all of Latin America on the float sponsored by the Michael D. Sewell Memorial Foundation.
Costa Ricans tuned in live to see Rodríguez wave from the float, dressed in a uniform that nodded to his band’s style. The parade started at 8 a.m. local time, with floats, equestrian units, and bands filling the streets under clear skies. Other international groups included Mexico’s Delfines Marching Band and Japan’s Mino Jiyu Gakuen Golden Bears Green Band.
Rodríguez shared his thoughts before the event, noting the honor reflected the hard work of musicians back home. “This shows what dedication can achieve,” he said in an interview last month. The recognition came after the Tournament of Roses invited him in November, following nominations from peers.
The parade led into the Rose Bowl Game between Indiana and Alabama, but for many in Costa Rica, Rodríguez’s moment stood out. It highlighted how a small-town director from Alajuela province could reach one of the world’s biggest stages.
Local officials praised the achievement. President Rodrigo Chaves called it a point of national pride during a New Year’s address. In Zarcero, residents gathered to watch the broadcast, cheering as Rodríguez appeared on screen.
The Banda Municipal de Zarcero, founded in 2008, continues to perform across Costa Rica and abroad. With over 300 members, it blends traditional marches with Latin beats. Rodríguez has directed the group since its start, building it into a symbol of cultural export. This year’s parade wrapped up with performances by Capital Cities and DEK of Hearts, but Rodríguez’s historic ride lingered as a highlight for Ticos. It opens doors for more Latin directors in future events, organizers said.
