Costa Rican Happy Hour #7: The ultimate World Cup playlist

Ready to get in the mood to watch Costa Rica’s 2018 World Cup debut on Sunday (at 6 am Costa Rica time, against Serbia)? Here’s our playlist of can’t-miss Costa Rican soccer tunes to kick off your weekend.

‘Agárrense de las manos’ – La Nota

A beloved classic and Costa Rica’s best-known soccer anthem. This video includes unforgettable moments from La Sele’s extraordinary performance at the first World Cup in which Costa Rica participated, in 1990, as well as later contests.

‘Agarrense de las manos’ 2018 Remix – William Fallas and Kenny Erickzon

I mean, you really can’t listen to this one too many times. The best part of this video is the reaction of the barbers who are cutting hair while watching the 2014 tournament. (Free travel tip: Do NOT get a haircut from a Costa Rican during one of La Sele’s World Cup matches.)

‘El otro gol’ – Gandhi

The popular Costa Rican rock group turned their attention to soccer in this ode to Costa Rica’s favorite sport.

‘Playa, montaña y gol’ – Gonín featuring Alonso Solís

Former National Team player Solís was popularly known as ‘El Mariachi,’ in honor of his family’s mariachi band, and he put his vocal stylings on display in this number.

‘Lo daremos todo’ – 1990 National Team

We’ve arguably saved the best for last. Nothing is more heartwarming, futbolísticamente hablando, than watching Costa Rica’s World Cup pioneers, the 1990 Sele, pledge that ‘We’ll give it all.’ They sure did. (Watch for the magical costume change around the one-minute mark.)
