Celebrating 193 years of Central American independence

Costa Rican President Luis Guillermo Solís stands at Monday’s flag hanging ceremony at the Casa Presidencial. Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua will all celebrate 193 years of independence this month and the flags of all five countries will hang at Casa Presidencial through the end of September. Independence Day will be officially celebrated on Sept. 15 in commemoration of the day in 1821 when a Central American congress first declared their independence from Spain.
