Photo Exhibit: “Osaka – The Heart and Sole”

NORTH American Gary Kwiatekreturned from a 2002 trip to Osaka, Japan,with a memory card full of shoes, kimonos,crowded subways, children, pagodas andcherry blossoms.The artist then conveyor-belted thedaily-life images of the city through hisphoto enhancement machine, applyingfilters and experimental printing techniques.The results are on exhibit at theVeritas University in Zapote, southeast ofSan José.Kwiatek broke onto the photographyscene only a few years ago, a footnote to a30-year performing arts career workingwith Disney and Universal Studios that isemerging as a second chapter in his life.He has had five exhibits around San Joséin the past year.Through his exhibit, called “Osaka –The Heart and Sole,” Kwiatek hopes toshare glimpses of the city – cultural, ethnicand economic – with people who may nothave been there, he said.“I hope these images act as a catalyst.To talk with a stranger, see a familiar objectdifferently, go somewhere you’ve neverbeen… I hope they stir some emotions.”The exhibit is showing in the GómezMiralles Gallery at the Veritas Universityof Art, Design and Architecture until April22, Monday to Friday, 8 a.m.-6 p.m., andSaturdays, 8 a.m.-1 p.m. For more info,contact the artist at creativediversions@racsa.co.cr or voycebox@yahoo.com.
