Bust in Costa Rica disrupts multinational drug trafficking ring

A multinational police effort by the governments of Costa Rica, Nicaragua and Panama ended Wednesday with the dismantling of a drug trafficking network that smuggled cocaine from Colombia to Mexico, a Costa Rican police official said.

“It’s been very positive. Investigations carried out in coordination with the police of Panama and Nicaragua have been a complete success in the fight against organized crime,” Costa Rican Public Security Vice Minister Celso Gamboa said on Wednesday.

Police seized $1 million, 1,700 hits of crack and 20 vehicles in raids carried out in the Costa Rican provinces of Limón, Heredia and Alajuela. Five members of the smuggling ring were arrested.

Gamboa said that in a year, police operations in the three countries have resulted in 55 arrests and the seizure of more than 2 tons of cocaine.
