Public workers and teachers call for (another) strike

The High School Teachers Association and public employee unions on Wednesday announced they will go on strike on June 26.

In a statement, workers said they planned to protest “government corruption and poor administration of the public funds.”

Unions also will protest the government’s alternative fiscal plan, which includes freezing salaries and eliminating several public-employee benefits.

Union leaders also plan to draw attention to President Laura Chinchilla’s “financial disaster,” a reference to the scandal-plagued Route 1856, a roadway project parallel to the northern border with Nicaragua.

Workers will strike at 9 a.m. on June 26 at La Merced Park, in downtown San José.
