Human rights groups in Brazil to protest against Tico lawmaker

Human Rights groups from Brazil are preparing a demonstration to mark the arrival of Costa Rican lawmaker Justo Orozco, appointed to chair the 17th Meeting of Human Rights, Justice and Prison Policies of the Latin American Parliament Aug. 28- 29 in Brasilia.

Toni Reis, president of the Brazilian Association of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender People sent a letter to the Costa Rican Legislative Assembly and the executive branch to “express disapproval of Orozco’s arrival.”

The letter states that Orozco “has openly expressed his opposition to homosexual rights, which shows that he is not the ideal person to chair a commission on human rights.”

The Brazilians also requested the removal of Orozco from the Legislative Assembly’s Human Rights Commission and the appointment of a new representative from Costa Rica for the forum.

Geavanny Delgado, member of Costa Rica’s Diversity Movement, confirmed to local Radio Reloj that the Brazilian groups “will do all they can to prevent the presence of Orozco at the summit.”
