Costa Rica to improve bad weather safety procedures at San José airport

Rainy and excessively cloudy conditions in Costa Rica’s capital could become less of a problem for major airlines operating out of Juan Santamaría International Airport, the country’s principal airport. Avianca Airlines Executive Vice President Estuardo Ortiz announced plans to install a new satellite-guided landing system that will be up and running in early 2013, Ortiz said in a press release.

The new guidance system will help pilots navigate difficult weather conditions, and reduce delays and cancellations during bad weather.

Ortiz also said the company is “pleased with recent improvements” at the country’s main airport, and short-term expansion of the terminal is unnecessary. But he added that “improvements in operating procedures should be done soon.”
