Preventive alert issued for strong waves at Costa Rica’s Pacific shores

A low-pressure system off the Pacific coast could generate waves up to 10 feet, according to the Center for Research in Marine Sciences (CIMAR) at the University of Costa Rica.

The National Emergency Commission (CNE) on Wednesday warned Central and South Pacific residents to remain alert at least until Friday.

According to CIMAR oceanographer Omar Lizano, strong waves generated by storms from the south Pacific could reach these areas.

The CNE advised local residents and visitors to take extra security measures to prevent accidents with small boats, mostly for residents of the province of Puntarenas in El Carmen, El Cocal, Caldera Beach, Boca Vieja, Esterillos, Bejuco, Dominical, Pavones, Palo Seco and Quepos.

CNE experts also reported that they are monitoring the formation of a tropical storm that could affect most of Central America in coming days.
