Strong waves prompt preventive alert on Costa Rica’s Pacific coast

Waves up to 10 feet could hit the Pacific coast of Costa Rica from Wednesday through Friday, according to the National Emergency Commission and the University of Costa Rica’s Ocean Sciences and Limnology Research Center (CIMAR).

According to CIMAR, tides above 10 feet are expected  from Wednesday and could increase on Thursday and Friday, with heights up to 10.5 feet.

Authorities particularly are concerned with residents living in low areas, including Estero, Barrio El Carmen and Cocal in Puntarenas, Boca Vieja and Cocal in Quepos, Playa Azul and Corralillo in Tárcoles, Palo Seco and Isla Damas.

CIMAR oceanographer Omar Lizano said back surges from the south of the continent will continue through the week, along with moderate to strong winds in the North Pacific, which are likely to generate rough seas.
