Theater festival celebrates Children’s Day

Sept. 9 is Children’s Day in Costa Rica, and a Children’s Theater Festival aims to celebrate the kiddies throughout the month at the National University (UNA) in Heredia, north of San José.

Organized by the theater project of the university’s School of Performing Arts, the festival will feature a different play each Sunday for the rest of September. This Sunday, Aby, the children’s theater section of Abya Yala theater group, presents “El mundo cuenta,” a street play with an environmental theme featuring puppets made out of recycled materials. On Sept. 18, Grupo Artístico Yoruva will take kids on “Un paseo por el bosque tropical” (“A Trip Through the Tropical Forest”), and to close the festival, El Almo theater group will present “El principito,” based on Antoine de SaintExupéry’s celebrated children’s story “The Little Prince,” Sept. 25.

Performances are at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. each Sunday at UNA’s Atahualpa del Cioppo Theater, 800 m northeast of the Burger King in Heredia. Admission costs ₡2,000 ($4) for kids and ₡2,500 ($5) for adults. For information, call 2277-3386 or 8838-8875.
