New app offers updates on Costa Rica tides, wind conditions

A new application for mobile phones and devices will offer information on Costa Rica’s sea conditions along both Caribbean and Pacific shores, as well as around Cocos Island.

The free app is called MIO-CIMAR and was created by experts from the University of Costa Rica‘s Center for Research in Marine Sciences and Limnology (CIMAR).

Every Monday and Thursday CIMAR experts update information on waves, tides and any ocean and weather phenomenon that may pose a threat for coastal areas, UCR reported in a press release.

Animated graphics and maps show wave height, direction and duration, and also display data on average wind speed, gust strength and direction.

The tool also provides information about ocean currents and ocean temperatures from Mexico to Colombia.

The app is available for download for users of both Google Android devices and Apple’s iOS operating system.

CIMAR oceanographer Omar Lizano said the idea for the application came after National Coast Guard officers told them they could use an app to alert them to any situation that could represent a threat while they’re on the open sea.

“Now Coast Guard officers as well as all Costa Ricans can be informed and prepared for all situations,” Lizano said.

The app also provides historical information and scientific articles published by CIMAR experts.
