Tico Ronald Araya wins first leg of Vuelta Ciclística a Costa Rica

Costa Rican Ronald Araya on Sunday won the first leg of the Vuelta Ciclísta a Costa Rica, a multi-day cycling race that began with a course from the capital San José to the Caribbean port of Limón.

Araya won the 154.6-kilometer stretch with a time of 3 hours, 22 minutes and 52 seconds. Tico Roberto Jiménez and Cuban Yasmani Martínez came in a close second, at only 36 seconds behind the leader.

Cyclists will compete in a second leg of the race from Limón to Guápiles on Monday, a distance of 134 km.

Hundreds of cyclists from around the world – including Russia, Chile, Argentina, Colombia, Cuba and Costa Rica – compete in the Vuelta, which ends on Dec. 25.
