Italy coach Prandelli resigns immediately after group stage elimination

With Costa Rica and the Americas upending the 2014 World Cup, one European coach already has lost his job.

Italy coach Cesare Prandelli announced his resignation Tuesday after the Azzurri were eliminated in the first round of the World Cup after losing 1-0 to Uruguay.

Prandelli accepted responsibility for the team’s failure at the Brazil as he presented his resignation. The President of the Italian Federation (FIGC) Giancarlo Abate also stepped down after the match.

The Italians lost to Costa Rica, 1-0, last Friday. However the four-time World Cup champions only needed a tie against Uruguay to advance to the knockout round of the tournament.

English coach Roy Hodgson will keep his job despite his Three Lions crashing out of the World Cup, and finishing last in Group D.
