Costa Rica police seize nearly 2 tons of cocaine this weekend

Costa Rica’s battle with international drug traffickers continued this weekend with the Saturday seizure of 1.7 tons of cocaine during two early-morning raids near both the Pacific and Caribbean coasts.

Two Colombian men were arrested in one of the operations, a Public Security Ministry press release said.

The new administration’s public security minister, Celso Gamboa, said in a press conference attended by President Luis Guillermo Solís that, “Our mission is to safeguard our coasts from drug trafficking.”

In the first raid, police discovered 965 kilograms of cocaine hidden in the sand and among palm trees at Playa Linda, in the Pacific coast canton of Aguirre.

In the second raid, cops seized 731 kilos of cocaine wrapped in plastic bags and stashed in two chicken coops at a home in the Caribbean town of Guácimo.

Police received an anonymous tip about the drug stash. Two Colombian men, one aged 77, were arrested.
