Officials from the Prosecutor’s Office on Tuesday raided 36 companies linked to contracts with the National Roadway Council (CONAVI) as part of an investigation into irregularities and alleged bribes during the construction of Route 1856, a border road between Costa Rica and Nicaragua.
A total 150 Judicial Investigation Police (OIJ) and 30 judges performed the raids, intending to seize documents related to payments made for the construction of the 160-kilometer road. No arrests were made, authorities from OIJ said.
President Laura Chinchilla said in a press release that “they are very pleased with the work being done by the Prosecutor’s Office to clarify the facts and [find those responsible, who] betrayed our country in a case that has been so painful for our nation.” She also stated that “absolutely all those responsible must pay for their actions”.
Two weeks ago, officials from the Prosecutor’s Office also raided the main offices of CONAVI, the National Emergency Commission and the residence of former CONAVI director, Carlos Acosta.
