Costa Rica holds first electronic recycling event

As part of Terra Nostra’s Third Annual National Cleanup Day, Costa Rica will hold its first electronics recycling event. Residents and businesses can drop off electronics at one of 31 recycling centers throughout Costa Rica during the next two weekends.

Items accepted for recycling include computers, cellphones, printers and televisions. Appliances such as air conditioners, refrigerators and microwaves will not be accepted.

Metales Selmet will be sponsoring the event and will process the electronic waste (or e-waste) that is collected. The company possesses the necessary certification to properly treat this special type of waste.

Recycling electronics is important because the items contain materials such as lead, mercury and cadmium that release toxins into the environment as they breakdown. These toxins are harmful to human nervous and digestive systems, cause skin allergies and affect reproduction.

For a full list of recycling centers visit Metales Selmet-Costa Rica or Terra Nostra on Facebook.
