US man attempting to leave Costa Rica arrested on rape charges

Judicial Investigation Police (OIJ) on Tuesday afternoon arrested a U.S. man in his 30s who is accused of rape as he attempted to board a flight at Juan Santamaría International Airport outside San José, according to a statement from the OIJ on Wednesday.

The suspect, Jeremy Scott Hunt, was on an immigration watch list for the alleged rape of a 20-year-old Costa Rican woman in 2011. Hunt has been in Costa Rica since August 2010, according to immigration records.

OIJ agents handed the suspect over to a criminal court in San José.

The crime of rape carries a prison sentence of up to 16 years in Costa Rica, according to the country’s Penal Code.
