Private-sector employers offer 1.84 percent wage increase

The Costa Rican Employers Chamber on Monday submitted a proposal for a 1.84 percent wage increase to the National Salary Council for the next six-month pay period.

The National Union of Workers last week requested a 3.03 percent wage increase and an 8 percent hike for employees receiving minimum wage.

“The proposal takes into account the cost of living and growth of the per capita Gross Domestic Product,” said Juan Ramón Rivera, vice president of the Costa Rican Union of Private Sector Chambers and Associations.

The government will announce next Monday at 3 p.m. the final increase for some 1.3 million private sector workers, accounting for 85 percent of Costa Rica’s workforce.

Last year, the wage increase for the last six months was 3 percent, and employers had offered 2.47 percent.
