CATIE Botanical Gardens Home to Art and Biodiversity

At the Tropical Agricultural Research Center’s (CATIE) botanical gardens, fine art and science have come together with a host of butterflies, beetles, wasps and other insects.

The garden, which exhibits exotic plants from all over the world, will be the temporary home of “Art and Biodiversity,” a photography exhibit which examines the extensive insect collection of the National Biodiversity Institute (INBio) up close.

With prints borrowed from the collection of the Costa Rican Museum of Art, the insectual exposition will feature the work of Costa Rican photographers Ana Joyce Chinchilla, Alonso Sánchez, Juan Carlos Tercero, Jorge Corrales and Oscar Abarca. Each of the artists’ 10 best insect prints will be on display.

The CATIE Botanical Garden will maintain the exhibit until January 2011. The garden is located on the Siquirres highway two kilometers south of the center of the Caribbean slope town of Turrialba. The show is open to the public Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Entrance is ¢1,000 ($2) for Costa Rican nationals and ¢3,000 ($6) for foreign tourists.
