Regional drug control experts to meet in Costa Rica

Leading drug control officials from Central America and the Caribbean will meet in Costa Rica this week to asses the impact of the illicit drug trade on the region and how to respond more efficiently to threats.

The 52nd Ordinary Session of the Inter-American Drug Abuse Control Commission (CICAD), a body of the Organization of American States, will take place Nov. 28-30.

OAS Secretary General José Miguel Insulza will present a report on the progress of illicit drug policy in the hemisphere, as called for during the OAS Summit of the Americas held last April in Colombia.

During this week’s meeting, Costa Rica will assume the presidency of CICAD for 2012-2013. President Laura Chinchilla will offer opening remarks at the event, which begins Wednesday.
