We have had very sporadic reports on Pacificcoast fishing, but the bite appears to be holding, though not as outrageous as in past weeks, and the Playa Carrillo region on the northern coast is still the hot spot.
Gregg Mufson reports from Zancudo Lodge near Golfito on the southernmost coast that fishing has picked up substantially in that region, thanks to a drop in water temperatures, now holding in the low 80s.
Toward the end of last week, Mufson said boats were releasing up to eight sailfish, but the average per boat was five, working up to 15 miles off shore.
“We found dolphins every day, signaling the presence of tuna, and were able to land several yellowfin tuna in the 20-to-30-pound range,” he reported, adding that one guest at the lodge caught a 50-pound roosterfish inshore last weekend.
On the Caribbean coast, Dan Wise reports that tarpon fishing remains steady at Barra Colorado. Anglers have been working the river mouth and the inshore breakers and rip line, with 27 jumped and three brought to the boat for release last week.
He said Joel Greenson from Michigan jumped six and boated one, while Texas anglers Rockford Woods and Cathy Bell, on a one-day trip, had two in the air and boated one. Jim Kearl, of the western San José suburb of Escazú, and his family from Canada got one of the three they had in the air to the boat for release.
