‘El Feo’: Mayoral Candidacy a No-Go

MANAGUA – Former presidential candidate and economist Edmundo “Mundo” Jarquín announced this week that due to “legal difficulties” he will not be running for mayor of Managua on the ticket of the Sandinista Renovation Movement (MRS), as many had hoped he would.
Jarquín said that under the Electoral Law – a product of the power-sharing pacto between President Daniel Ortega and former President Arnoldo Alemán – he cannot run for mayor because of a stipulation that requires him to have lived in Managua for four years previous to the election, which is in November. Jarquín had lived for more than a decade in Washington, D.C., working as an analyst for the Inter-American Development Bank, before moving back to Nicaragua in 2005 to run on the presidential ticket of the MRS in a campaign in which he good-naturedly dubbed himself “El Feo” (The Ugly).
“We didn’t anticipate this circumstance, but will allow me to work on the elections all around the country,” Jarquín said.
