Marathon Sunday In La Sabana Park

Last call! Sign up today to run 42,195 meters Sunday in Costa Rica’s International Marathon, which is… quite a few laps around the hopefully sunny La Sabana Park in western San José.

Besides the full marathon, women and men will vie for fame, trophies and Timex watches in a 21-kilometer half marathon; a mini marathon of 4 or 8 km; a roller-skating marathon of 4, 8 or 21 km; and a 4 or 8 km wheelchair division.

The full and half marathons start at noon and cost ¢7,000 (about $13.50) to enter. These races require affiliation with the Costa Rican Track and Field Federation (FECOA, 255-3479). Other races start at 11 a.m., with entry fees of ¢3,000 (about $5.75).

This is the marathon’s 10th year – it’s back in action after a two-year break, during which organizers said they were unable to secure the necessary permits.

Winners of the “Elite” and “Master” classes of the full and half marathons will take home cash prizes. Everyone gets a T-shirt and certificate. Spectators are welcome. Call 222-0804 to sign up; today is your last chance.
