Argentine Artist Forges Own Style

COMPLEX geometric designs painted in oil, fused with influences of modern abstract art and presented with “subtle ironies” and “little surprises” – this is what can be expected upon visiting “Visiones,” an exhibit by Argentinean painter José Rosenblatt, on display at the Jacob Karpio Galería in San José.Rosenblatt, who pulls influence from the geometric and modern style of the Madí artists of 1940s Argentina, has created his own style of contemporary art. It was this new style of expression that first caught the eye of gallery owner Jacob Karpio.“Rosenblatt’s colors are alive, very modern,” Karpio said. “I love his fashion. Painting is out of fashion and he wants to recreate (it) in his own way.”Karpio has worked for 20 years to bring contemporary international art to his gallery for Costa Rica’s citizens and visitors.“Costa Ricans and foreigners can come here and see a broad range of art from different cultures,” he said. Rosenblatt’s works embody the conflict among different forms of modern art that have arisen throughout Latin America, according to Karpio. He says he hopes to draw more dynamic, new styles of art such as Rosenblatt’s into his gallery.“The international art market is new to Costa Rica, and it is growing,” Karpio said. “I want to teach people how to see art, collect art and enjoy art.”Showing alongside “Visiones” is “Paisajes,” a collection of the works of 19 international artists hailing from Argentina, Japan, Belgium and other countries.Karpio also has a showroom in the United States: The Karpio and Facchini Gallery in Miami, Florida.“Visiones” will be showing Monday through Friday, 10 a.m.-5 p.m., and Saturdays by appointment until Sept. 20.
