Women’s Club Hosts Scholarship Brunch

THE Women’s Club of Costa Rica will hold its annual scholarship brunch May 12 – full of food, dancing and celebration of its successful scholarship program.Proceeds benefit the program, which financially assists 130 students in 31 public high schools. The brunch, open to the public, will feature folkloric dancing, and will introduce the students to the club and the private donors who have contributed money to sponsor a child.“It’s a bit more than just a fundraiser,” said Ann Sobel, president of the organization. “We really get to know these children. We are helping to keep children of this caliber in high school.”ALSO at the event, certificates will be presented to 28 student winners of merit awards, students with exceptionally high grades in the previous year and those who made a substantial improvement.University and high-school students will present speeches to the organization during the program activities. The club’s scholarships are awarded at the beginning of the academic year to students of scarce resources who have high grades and a strong possibility to leave the school early, Sobel said.SCHOOL counselors submit the names of students who qualify and then the committee makes the final decision based on their grades and economic status. The brunch will feature scrambled eggs (with bits of chile dulce), baked potatoes with grated vegetables, sausage, homemade bread, tea and coffee.“I did the tasting last week and I can assure you it will be quite a good filling,” Sobel said.THE brunch starts at 10:30 a.m. at the Costa Rica Country Club in Escazú. Reservations should be made by today. Tickets cost ¢6,000 and can be purchased from board members of the Women’s Club. For info or tickets, call 288-1417 or 267-7042.
