Juan Martin del Potro has another chance to enter the International Tennis Hall of Fame, and fans have until Sunday, October 25, to help the Argentine former US Open champion earn a place in the Class of 2027. Del Potro joins Australia’s Ash Barty and Russia’s Svetlana Kuznetsova on the ballot in the player category. Japan’s Shingo Kunieda is nominated separately in the wheelchair tennis category. The nominations were announced October 18.
This is del Potro’s second consecutive appearance on the ballot. He was nominated for the Class of 2026 but did not secure induction. Roger Federer was elected that year. If selected, del Potro would join Guillermo Vilas and Gabriela Sabatini as the third Argentine player in the Hall of Fame. Vilas entered in 1991 and Sabatini in 2006.
Del Potro’s career included 22 tour-level singles titles, a climb to No. 3 in the world and a central role in some of Argentina’s biggest tennis victories. His defining individual achievement came at the 2009 US Open, where he beat Rafael Nadal in the semifinals before defeating Roger Federer in a five-set final. It was his only Grand Slam singles title. He returned to the final in New York in 2018.
His record representing Argentina further strengthens his case. Del Potro won Olympic singles bronze in London in 2012 and silver in Rio de Janeiro in 2016. Later in 2016, he helped Argentina win its first Davis Cup title. Fans can support his nomination by casting a ballot at vote.tennisfame.com before voting closes October 25. The public vote provides a small boost to the separate ballots cast by tennis journalists, historians and existing Hall of Famers.
The candidate who finishes first in the fan vote receives three additional percentage points. Second place earns two points, and third place earns one. To be elected, a nominee must reach at least 75% approval after those bonuses are added. Winning the fan vote does not guarantee induction. The process also does not limit election to one player: each nominee is assessed against the approval threshold, meaning del Potro, Barty and Kuznetsova could all qualify.
The elected Class of 2027 and the dates for the induction celebration are expected to be announced later this fall. For del Potro, the next step is securing enough support to turn a second nomination into a place alongside Argentina’s other tennis greats.
