Couple Shares ‘Love Letters’ With Theater Audiences

The English-language Little Theatre Group’s production of Alan Gurney’s “Love Letters” opens tonight at the Laurence Olivier Theater, off Paseo Colón in San José.

The play has a cast of two – a man and a woman, both in middle age – and consists solely of correspondence between them since Andy accepted a party invitation from Melissa for her 7th birthday.

Director Sally O’Boyle has cast three separate couples to portray Andy and Melissa, adding a fresh twist to the usual theater system of a single cast for the entire run of a play. Grady Bruce and Laurie Gould-Blizzard, Harry Towne and Margie Davis, and Tom Humes and Lisa DeFuso will put the characters in different lights as they alternate performances.

Seated at separate tables, the actors deliver their dialogue without blocking or movement, allowing the audience to fully focus on the quality of the dialogue.

The production will run for three weekends, through Dec. 7, Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30 p.m. and Sundays at 2:30 p.m. Ticket prices are ¢3,000 ($5.40) or ¢1,500 ($2.70) for students. For information and reservations, go to www.littletheatregroup.org or call 8355-1623.

The Laurence Olivier Theater is at Avenida 4, Calle 28, next to the Sala Garbo movie theater.
