San José’s Parque Central Closes for Six Months of Renovation

If your route through downtown San José cuts across Parque Central, you need a new one. The park closed Monday and will stay closed for about six months while crews rebuild it from the ground up. The Municipality of San José shut the whole park rather than fencing off sections, because the work touches every part of it.

Expect the barriers to stay up until February 2027. Plan around Avenida 2 or Avenida 4 rather than through the middle, and give yourself an extra few minutes if you normally cross here on the way to the Cathedral or the Melico Salazar theater. Both remain open, as do Plaza de la Cultura, Parque Morazán and Parque España a few blocks east and north.

The contract went to Montedes S.A. and is worth ₡619,149,088, or roughly $1.36 million at the Central Bank reference rate of ₡454.18 for August 4. The municipality has said it wants the park to work again as the city’s main meeting point, and the design leans that way. Crews will lay new paving stones in varying colors, expand the green areas and put them on an irrigation system, and replace the benches and other street furniture. Pergolas will go in to create shade, and a new lighting system is meant to make the park usable after dark rather than something you walk quickly past.

Two additions stand out. One is a sensory park, designed so that people with different disabilities can actually use the space. The other sits underneath the park’s best-known feature: the historic kiosk will get a café built into its basement level. That café will not open with the park. The municipality plans to put it out to public tender once construction finishes, which pushes its likely opening into the first half of 2027. So when the barriers come down in February, expect a finished park and an empty basement.

The scale of the closure reflects how heavily the park gets used. Municipal figures put annual foot traffic above 2.3 million people, and the site has anchored the capital since 1885, when what was then the Plaza Principal was first planted with trees and laid out with paths and a fountain.

Six-month construction timelines in downtown San José have a history of slipping, and the municipality has not said what happens if the schedule does. For now, February 2027 is the date on the contract.
